The Chief Environmental Protection Inspectorate announced that on 7th December 2016 a methodology for monitoring quality of flowing waters’ hydromorphological elements was accepted, which since 2017 is to become a part of the National Environment Monitoring carried out by VIEP.

The methodology was developed by a team led by prof. Szoszkiewicz from the University of Life Sciences in Poznań, with participation of experts from IMIGW, SGGW, UR in Cracow, WIOS in Poznań and Wałbrzych, UAM in Poznań and WWW Polska. The method involves an assessment of the whole body of surface water on the basis of cartographic materials and orthophotomap (tortuosity, alluviums, hydrotechnical transformations, naturalness of an area in 100m zone from a bank of small rivers, in 1km zone from a bank of large rivers, tree stands, river-valley connection), then field study of a riverbed, coastal zone and river valley within 1-3 test areas. The field study report is based on the so-called RHS method and it consists of registration, within 500m section, all hydromorphological elements, and then calculating the hydromorphological diversity index and transformations of hydromorphology index. On the basis of these indicators synthetic Hydromorphological River Index is calculated, which is a grade on a scale from 0 to 1. High values represent a hydromorphological state similar to the reference (natural) one, while low – a weak and poor hydromorphological state. The method was tested on more than 500 river water bodies.

The adopted method is an important progress in the river monitoring in Poland. For the first time it is in accordance with the European and Polish PN-EN 14614: 2008 standard. This method allows five-class assessment of hydromorphology, which is a significant improvement, because so far in Poland it was assumed in advance that the river’s hydromorphological state can be only “very good”or” good” – which resulted in systemic errors of underestimating the pressure of hydrological transformations, repeatedly responsible for the unsatisfactory condition of biological elements.

The very introduction of a reliable monitoring and evaluation of rivers’ hydromorphological aspect should have an essential educational value for rivers’ managers and environmental protection services – it is achieved by realising that natural elements of hydromorphology – including “rifts”, “blockages”, “silts”, “alluviums”, dead trees in course etc. are good, not bad. This can be an important step in restoring good ecological status of rivers, which now is often being hindered by bad hydromorphological state, including the lack of the natural elements mentioned above, not water pollution.GIOŚ statement:

Announcement

Regional Directorate for Environmental Protection in Szczecin within Active Education is planning to organise educational kayaking. It will be carried out on Natura 2000 areas where the project Active protection of water-crowfoots habitats and restoration of wildlife corridor in the River Drawa basin in Poland is realised: natural reserves of Drawieński forest, lake Lubie and the Drawa Valley, Czaplineckie Lakes, the Valley of Radew, Chociel and Chotla and the Grabowa Vally.

We are making a request to You to present proposals for one-day educational rafting routes, on the rivers: Drawa (according to the project outside Drawieński National Park), Korytnica, Radew and Grabowa. Taking, together with You, actions to protect river ecosystems, is an extremely important element of the project.

Educational kayaking will allow direct experience of Natura 2000 areas where the project is realised, and will enable to see water-crowfoots rivers as the habitat of great natural value, also extremely important for the man. During these meetings we will also have the opportunity to observe ecological river corridors. Additionaly each rafting will be enriched by a competition for the participants. Joint meetings of the people implementing the project with those interested in the subject of rivers’ protection will also be an excellent opportunity to show natural values and tourist attractiveness of Natura 2000 areas.

Please send proposals of kayaking routes, with the start and end points, and a brief description of the route, on an e-mail: life.drawa.szczecin@rdos.gov.pl or fax no (94) 36 70 930 by 31 July 2015.

The first kayaking within Active education is planned this year, about the organisational details of the event we will inform on the website: http://drawalifeplus.rdos.szczecin.pl.

We invite you to cooperate and see you on the trail!
